If you read about the previous project “6.5-284” you would know that its original intent was to be something else. That something else was a .300 win mag. Like the article stats a mishap on the bolt order on our part changed its direction. Which also changed the components of this build significantly!

The Chassis

From the beginning we knew this rifle was going to built on a “Chassis” style system. There is SEVERAL manufactures out there making extremely nice ones. We narrowed the field down to 3 we liked:  J. Allen Enterprise, Accuracy International, and Ashbury Precision. For this particular build they all had the features and look we wanted. The problem is that most of them were backordered for up to a year.

We were lucky enough to find one on gunbroker that had hardly been used, if at all. Although swat black was the preferred color the titanium grey we found looked just as nice. This rifle was built based off the Military MK13 Mod 5+ sniper rifle. And although more earthier tones better match the MK13. We wanted more of a SWAT team, LEO version.

These things are extremely nice and very beefy! We know why the military chooses them. Made from solid aluminum, they could take a beating. They are also fully adjustable to accommodate any shooter quickly. And although the action could still be bedded into it. It is not required and the whole idea behind them is just that. The action can be removed and reinstalled without affecting accuracy. Why that matters I'm not sure. But we like the idea.

Action

As stated earlier this rifle was to be built on a Remington 700 action originally. When its donor took a different path a decision was needed. And that decision was a Surgeon. Surgeon is well known in the industry and easily in the front of the line when it comes to actions. They make exactly what we needed. A precision action built beefy enough to nicely match the chassis we choose. They come with a integral .250” recoil lug and 20 MOA Scope rail. And they are designed to fit any 700 stock or chassis. We correctly ordered this one with a .550” bolt face and a M16 style extractor.

Barrel & Brake

McGowen in Kalispel, MT custom made us the barrel. We went with a heavy contour, their #7 to be exact. It’s a straight taper, Medium Target contour, .875 muzzle diameter, 26” finished length and 1-10” twist. The barrel weighs a hefty 7 pounds all by its self.

The muzzle was threaded for APA’s “Fat Bastard” brake with 5/8x24 threads. The back was taper turned to match the barrel and clocked.

Lastly the receiver end was chambered with a Pacific Tool .300 Win Mag Finish Reamer and then turned and threaded for our action.

Optics

Again, Leupold was chosen for the scope. Same one as the last. 5-25X56. Except this one isn’t illuminated. And like the last its sporting the Tremor 3 Reticle inside. We can’t express enough how much we like the xmas tree style holdover reticle.

American Defense Manufacturing holds it secure on top with their QD style Recon mount. A solid one-piece design that we hand lapped and torqued.
